Memories of Three Mile Island

Memories of Three Mile Island

  • It appears that there is a new attempt to reopen the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania as a little refresher Three Mile Island is the location of the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. History. On March 28, 1979, there was a partial nuclear meltdown of the Unit 2 Reactor. I was attending college in Shippensburg, Pa, about an hour southwest of Three Mile Island at the time. I remember there was talk of using the college as a temporary evacuation center in case they had to evacuate the surrounding area. Even though that seems pretty close for an evacuation center the prevailing wind is going eastward, so it did make some sense. This was before the internet and social media, so everything was word of mouth including all the rumours. Yes, there were a lot of rumors and a few conspiracy theories even back then. Despite what you may have heard people haven’t changed there have always been and will always be rumors and gossip.
